In 2023, we allocated more than USD 29,45 million to social initiatives and projects.
A significant portion of this amount was directed toward promoting local education and health, as well as reforestation and agriculture initiatives, and supporting the development of local businesses. We also assisted communities in planning their long-term objectives for 2030.
One of the most considerable local and regional economic impacts is generated due to the economic activity from our operations in the area. An example of this is the creation of direct and indirect employment for the Southern Macro Region, especially for the Apurimac population.
In 2022, we recorded 2,826 direct and indirect local workers, of which 32% were from the Apurimac region.
The provinces from which most direct and indirect workers come are Cotabambas, Abancay, and Andahuaylas. The graph below shows the trend of direct and indirect local employment in the Apurimac region, with a continuous increase since 2018.
We acknowledge the significance of having suppliers for goods and services that align with high operational and sustainability standards, as well as adhering to industry best practices. Their contributions are essential to ensuring the effective operations at our site.
As part of our value chain, we require support services for mining, energy, logistics, and other activities related to fixed and movable plant assets.
In 2022, purchases in Cotabambas and Grau, in our Area of Direct Influence (AID) amounted to 64.6 M USD, an increase from the 2021 expenditure. Additionally, international purchases totalled 47.4 M USD.
To promote local employment, we have implemented different educational programs to train and enhance the skills of the local population. In 2022, we conducted a Plant and Mine training program with members of the Fuerabamba community.
In August 2022, we signed our first copper concentrate transportation contract with the Fuerabamba community company. This five-year contract promotes associativity as a mechanism to maximize the positive impact of contracting local services.
The company will provide the service with a fleet of fifty state-of-the-art trucks that meet our standards, including Euro 5 emissions regulations, low-noise engines, and technological devices for fatigue detection and driver assistance. The trucks will be operated by trained and certified personnel. This is one of the most significant service contracts worldwide signed with a community company.
The goal of the Kuska Program (Together, we generate more development) was to work synergistically with our contractor companies to increase the positive social impact within our area of influence.
Previously, we did not have information on, nor did we monitor, the social management plans of our strategic partners. Therefore, in the second quarter of 2022, we implemented a system for registering, aligning, and monitoring the execution of their plans, representing an annual investment of approximately USD 30 million.
