Our Region

Cultural Characteristics

The population of the Grau and Cotabambas provinces is of Quechua origin and has preserved a number of traditions and customs that reflect their everyday life.  As happens with many other traditional cultures, spare time and work intermingle and integrate through cultural symbols, which link the two aspects of life. We can see the importance of agricultural production and the activities of each tradition during celebrations. The production method originates in ancestral traditions and adopts religious and cultural expressions that are really production strategies more or less integrated in the surroundings. Therefore, any development project must take into account this deeply rooted traditional Quechua culture in order to be successful.
